Trust Notes | September 2020 Issue

Warderick Wells is the command center of the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park. It’s homebase for all of our vessels, communications equipment, staff residence, and the military outpost. With all of these important components on this one island, you must need consistent and sufficient power to keep all these things going.

Warderick Wells, the brain and heart of the ECLSP

Warderick Wells is a self-sustaining island. The team there make their own water, ice, manage their waste, and run their own power. Historically, the island has been powered by diesel generators, and we’ve sure gone through a few of them over the decades. We’re soon venturing into solar energy, and someday we will have a solar-powered power plant providing us with consistent power.

Until then we needed a reliable temporary solution until we can acquire solar equipment. We have been balancing between the use of three small generators to power Warderick Wells for some time. Not only was this solution not providing full power to the cay, but it also was time-consuming switching between generators and not ideal.

We were gifted a brand new generator by a generous donor who understands the importance of being fully powered to protect this marine sanctuary. Because of this donor, we can now continue to protect the important marine resources and visitors of the ECLSP.

Check out the process and of offloading the generator and what our team had to say to Lucas Silva in recognition of this exceptional donation:

Special thanks to Council Member, Rachel Lightbourne, for helping us secure this generator and to Captain Nigel Bower of Ship Channel Cay Barge Services for shipping it across the blue! We are truly grateful.
