A Day of Exploration and Learning at Bonefish Pond – CSM Intern Narratives
By Quintez Bethel
Friday began with the anticipation of adventure. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and a gentle breeze setting the scene for a serene and beautiful experience as we prepared for a day at Bonefish Pond National Park. We arrived at the park and eagerly set off in our kayaks, gliding over the calm waters toward a small peninsula.
Upon reaching the peninsula, we took a moment to soak in the surroundings and get some rest. The tranquillity of the park enveloped us, and soon we were engrossed in a great lesson about the history of Bonefish Pond National Park. We also learned about the different types of mangroves and the role they play in the ecosystem, acting as natural barriers against storms and providing habitat for a diverse array of wildlife.
After this educational stop, we continued our journey to a small island that is home to nesting birds. It was my first time visiting such an island, and the sight was nothing short of amazing. It was alive with activity as birds flew overhead and chirped in the trees. We were careful not to disturb them, aware of the importance of their nesting period, and we were especially careful not to disturb any nests close to or on the ground.
I was fortunate enough to capture some stunning photographs. The sight of White Crown Pigeons, Tri-coloured Herons, and Reddish Egrets was a highlight; and I even managed to photograph some chicks, their fluffy down catching the sunlight beautifully. The experience was both exhilarating and humbling, witnessing the delicate balance of nature up close.
We trotted around the island, marvelling at the natural beauty and vibrant birdlife. But, not wanting to stress the birds too much, we soon made our way back to the kayaks. Before journeying back, we ate lunch and relaxed with a refreshing dip in the water. The coolness of the water was invigorating, and it was the perfect way to cap off our day.
As the day drew to a close, we paddled back to our starting point. I felt peaceful and content. The day’s activities had provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and reflect on the week’s events. Bonefish Pond National Park offered us a glimpse into a world of natural beauty and tranquillity, and we left with our spirits lifted and our hearts full.
